After all of the hype and excitement over Beyonce's new "surprise" album (and due to the magic of a Best Buy gift card), I finally got around to purchasing it. There are 14 new songs and 17 videos. But as that old lady in the memes says "ain't nobody got time for that". So this review will be based on the one song and two videos that I actually listened to and watched.
Based on those songs I've listened to/watched, this album appears to be a concept album. And that concept is "Beyonce Has A Big Booty". Because it's everywhere. On the booklet cover (isn't she above this? What is she-- Britney Spears circa 1999?) and co-starring in all of the videos (okay, in two of them. At least). And mind you, I'm not complaining, but as an international entertainment journalist, I have to point these things out.
The song "Blow" is catchy. I think it's about something salacious, but I'm trying not to think about that right now. The video for that song is kind of 70's retro and features Beyonce roller skating. I may watch this again. Yeah, it was that good. The video for "Pretty Hurts" features our heroine in a beauty pageant as Miss Third Ward. Harvey Keitel inexplicably makes a cameo in the middle of it. I thought I was high, but he was really in it. You would think he would be working on Pulp Fiction 2 or something. The video was about the value that our society places on beauty and the ramifications. And it's really a thought provoking piece. Okay, not really. I was looking at her ass. As you will too.
So there you have it. Based on the song and the two video clips, I give it a thumbs up. With further listens or even the most preliminary analysis, this could of course all change. Hope this helped!

Daniel Bryan Video
Too bad they didn't have time to air this great Daniel Bryan video on Monday. Then again, I can kinda understand-- they had to make time for that "hilarious" Elvis sock puppet:

The Observer Gets Its Props
Here's a great article in the New York Times about my favorite publication, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (I've been a proud subscriber since 1993). I remember getting my first issue in college and skipping class to read it because I was so fascinated. Also, because it was a science class. Anyway, a great newsletter and quite often the highlight of my week. Read the article here.

Quick Notes from the Grammys
Notes from last night's Grammy Awards:
- I've officially turned heel on Taylor Swift. If I have to hear this broad whine about breaking up with someone just one more time...
- Rhianna and Chris Brown actually showed up together-- four years after the infamous fight. That's what they call "balls". What do you say when you run into them? Awkward!
- "I'm getting the urge for a ham sandwich"-- texted to me by a friend during Miranda Lambert's performance.
- Oh the state of rap today...
- Maybe it's just me, but I could have sworn that "Stronger" song by Kelly Clarkson came out about eight years ago.
- Best Dressed: Katy Perry
- All of the Justin Timberlake stuff bordered on overkill. The performance (which reeked of biting off Robin Thicke and Bruno Mars) was solid, but of course Kelly Rowland went overboard with her praise afterwards. But hey, she was just happy to be on TV two weeks in a row.
- Best performance of the night was the Bob Marley tribute with Sting and Bruno Mars.
- Frank Ocean had a nice CD. He just shouldn't be allowed to perform it live.
- Great end to the show with Chuck D and Uncle L. They've still got it.

The Rock's Super Bowl Ad
Check out The Rock's Super Bowl commercial below. They paid millions to have this air during the Super Bowl and here I am posting the thing for free. Apparently CBS has better people than me:

Fantastic!
Peep this brilliant segment from last night's Raw featuring Paul Heyman, Vince McMahon and the scariest man in the history of men, Brock Lesnar. It's stuff like this that make me want to forgive them for Hornswoggle, dance-offs, and any appearance of Stephanie McMahon on my TV.

American Idol Season Premiere
Questions after watching a half hour of the insufferable American Idol season premiere:
1. After the bloodletting of the judges from last season, how on earth did Randy Jackson survive the cut? Does he have a picture of one of the producers with a frog?
2. I love Mariah Carey, but I don't want to hear her talk. That wasn't really a question, but you get the point.
3. The very sight of Nicki Minaj makes you long for the "good ol' days" of Paula Abdul's incoherent ramblings.
4. Who is this brother dancing for chicken in the Applebee's ads?
