Dear Weekend Today Show, why on earth did you take Jenna Wolfe off the anchor desk and replace her with.... Not Jenna Wolfe?  Are you intentionally trying to tank your ratings?  I'm going to carry a picket sign. Not outside the Today Show, but inside the Hollywood Nation offices.  Probably not as effective, but it's the thought that counts.  I need an aspirin.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Nello Ferrara, who died on Feb. 3rd. Who is Nello Ferrara, you ask? He was the guy who invented the most delicious snack treat on Earth, the candy known as Lemonheads. All the networks and CNN should be devoting around the clock coverage to this guy and doing history pieces. R.I.P.

Catching Up

After taking a little summer hiatus, Hollywood Nation is back! Did I miss anything? Here's my take on some of the things that went down during the break:

The Summer of Punk: What a summer it's been for C.M. Punk in WWE. He had perhaps the match of the year with John Cena at Money In The Bank. He won the WWE title-- twice. He managed to get Vince McMahon to pay the rights to a real entrance song. He got mainstream press on such outlets as Jimmy Kimmel and espn.com. And he ate Kevin Nash alive on the mic on Monday's Raw. Damn! All I did during my summer was sleep and not update my blog.

Amy Winehouse: I was so sad to hear about the passing of one of my favorite singers, Amy Winehouse. It's unfortunate that her substance issues overshadowed her great musical talent. Click here, here and here for some of my favorite Amy songs.

Stacey Kiebler: Former WWE Diva Stacey Keibler is making the rounds on the gossip sites and entertainment shows because she is dating George Clooney. Well, if you're gonna date a wrestler, that's probably the one you want to pick. Plus, he'd look kinda weird showing up at a movie premiere with Kane.

Weekend Wrap-Up

UFC: Props to Jonny "Bones" Jones who captured the UFC light heavyweight title from Shogun Rua on Saturday. Even more remarkable, just hours before the fight he chased down a guy (who had broken into a woman's car and stolen her GPS) and held him until the police arrived. Damn, that brother whipped ass all day long.

Ring of Honor: The ROH World Title changed hands in New York on Saturday with Eddie Edwards taking the crown from Roderick Strong. And thank goodness, because God bless him, but Strong was putting me to sleep like I had just eaten a big Thanksgiving meal. Even though they are losing TV, I see ROH gaining a little momentum with the new champ, the Briscoe Brothers heel turn and Princess Mia (!).

Rihanna: Over the weekend Louis Farrakhan dissed Rihanna of all people by saying her performances were "filthy" and that anyone who enjoyed them were "swine". She shot back on Twitter with:

"A minister says I perform filthy, sat and watched the filth, then called U SWINE for doin the same! Haa is that judgment in ur tone?"

Burn. The worst part of this? I got called swine!

Nate Dogg, 1969-2011

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Nate Dogg (Nathaniel Hale), one of rap's most unique and influencial artists. I loved his catchy singing on some of the greatest songs ever, including "Ain't No Fun" with Snoop Dogg, "21 Questions" with 50 Cent and of course "Regulate" with Warren G. RIP.

News and Notes

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I only had one plate, but it could have fed a third world country for about a week. I'm taking it easy today, but here's some thoughts on things the last couple of days:

- Dancing with the Stars Finale: What a dreadful two hours. An hour and thirty minutes of filler plus the giant-headed Bristol Palin moping around the dancefloor yet again (and still getting scored higher than Kyle by that shithead judge in the middle) made for an agonizing show. In the end, the right person won (although Brandy would have given Jennifer Grey a run for her money) and Bristol gets to drive five hours back to Alaska in her truck, where she can use her newfound dance skills at the Wasilla Scores.

- New Release Monday: Picked up the new CDs by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj. These are must-have discs! Awesome lyrics and tremendous production work. You won't be sorry you bought these! (I haven't listened to them yet).

- Juan Cena: Despite WWE's storyline where John Cena was fired, local shows are advertising appearances by John Cena's Mexican cousin "Juan Cena". Ridiculous; they're starting to make TNA's writing team look like the writers of CSI.

The highlight of the weekend was The Rally to Restore Sanity/Fear on Comedy Central. The show opened with a forty minute set from The Roots, who were joined halfway by John Legend. If the place had a roof, they would have blown it off. The below footage isn't from the rally, but this is one of the epics they performed:




And don't forget to check your local listings for this week's Family Feud, featuring The Beautiful People (and an assortment of other wrestlers). It's my understanding that electronic stores nationwide can barely keep TVs in stock because of this. Here's a preview:

It's been rumored that Christina Aguilera and her man have split. Sorry to hear that, but it can only mean one thing-- the return of the assless chaps!:

I thought last night's confrontation between Ric Flair and Mick Foley was kinda sad and pointless, but I'll be glued to the set tonight when these two legends face-off on Impact. Glad to see this company is going with a youth movement. In other bouts, there will be a battle royal and a tag match to see who gets the name "The Beautiful People".

In other notes from the week, they got my hopes up that Bristol Palin was leaving Dancing with the Stars this week but it turned out to be Margaret Cho, who I thought gave a good effort. Probably Mrs. Brady and Palin will be next, although you can never count out the random black person ousting that inevitably occurs at some point in the season. Also, I'm glad we no longer have to deal with the annoying Jimmy T. on Survivor after this week. Looks like we might get new teams next week, which is for the best because the old people tribe was getting steamrolled.

News and Notes

I'm back! Here are my thoughts on some of the things I've missed the past couple of weeks:

Dancing with the Stars: I really love this season's cast but they've already ruined it in week two with atrocious judging (what else is new?), Team Palin's country asses, and saying that Bruno went too far in cracking on Michael Bolton. My favorite this season is Kyle, who seemingly came out of nowhere (at least in my household) to capture America's heart. It's about time someone represented for the chubby black guys. My shitfit when he gets voted out before Bristol Palin should be monumental.

Wake Up!: The Roots and John Legend together on one CD. Album. Of. The. Year. Get it.

Survivor: I'm sorry to see the Jimmy Johnson gimmick end in week three, but it hadn't really panned out to be all that great anyway. Some of the most vile contestants in history. I don't have a favorite yet.

Wrestling: Raw ratings continue to sink and PPV buyrates are in a steep decline. They're in no danger of going under but if ratings and buyrates continue to erode, it will be difficult to get those lost fans back. I don't even see a way to turn things around. TNA is still hopeless, but I'm intrigued by whatever "special announcement" they have planned for next week. They're probably getting rid of the wrestling ring altogether.

Kim Kardashian: Still hot.

R.I.P. Gary Coleman

Sorry to hear about the passing of actor Gary Coleman, who brought us all a lot of laughs from his roles in Diff'rent Strokes, Good Times and other projects. You can find some of his finest work on this clip (around the 7:30 mark). Also, below is a clip from his appearance in WCW from years ago:

Keith Elam a.k.a. Guru, 1966-2010

Sorry to hear about the passing of The Guru of Gangstarr, who died on Monday from cancer. He was one of my favorite rappers in the 90's as the voice of Gangstarr, then he followed that up with his series of Jazzmatzz albums, which yielded some classic moments. Among my favorite songs of his were "Ex-Girl To Next Girl", "Mass Appeal", "Dwyck", and "Who's Gonna Take The Weight". He will be greatly missed. Here are some classic clips below:

- WWE is stuck in a major rut. It seems like the GM gimmick has run its course already. The Shaq skits were predictible and featured typical WWE-style humor-- meaning not funny. And what's the main event of SummerSlam? Randy Orton vs. John Cena? Again? Why not plug Evan Borne in there? According to their stupid storylines, since he had the shortest win time in the Beat the Clock Challenge, shouldn't he get the title shot anyway? There I go, trying to make logic out of WWE storylines. What the hell am I doing?

- This just in: Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush have split. Fellas, I think I'm gonna step on up to the plate. Soon as I put this cheeseburger down.

- Hulk Hogan and his ex-ball & chain made it an official split today as well. Glad to know her crazy ass is single now.

- As many times as I have called for her head since 2002, I think the producers of American Idol need to pony up and give Paula Abdul some of that scrilla so she can stay on the show. They gave it up for Simon and Ryan, so it's only right. Yeah, I know-- I'll be regreting this statement ten minutes into the season premiere.

- Wrestling sites are reporting that Total Nonstop Action Wrestling has a deal with Playboy to feature some of the TNA Knockouts in the magazine. Could this mean The Beautiful People? This might save the publishing industry.

- I caught the new show on Fox tonight where overweight women vie for the love of a male goofball. The show was decent but seriously, did they need to show the weights right next to the ladies? I'm sitting there trying to listen to what they have to say then all of a sudden it's like "DAMN, 279!!!" Absurd.
