Velvet Sky Gets New Gig

It was reported online that Hollywood Nation's #2 favorite wrestler, Velvet Sky, will star in the new music video by Montgomery Gentry.  This should provide good exposure for the Impact Wrestling star.  Next mission: to find out what in the hell Montgomery Gentry is.

Donna Summer

Sorry to hear about the passing of disco icon Donna Summer  yesterday at the age of 63.  Not only did she rule the airwaves in the late 70's/early 80's with such hits as "She Works Hard For The Money", "Love To Love You Baby", and "I Feel Love", but her song "Hot Stuff" was the ring entrance theme song for one of my favorite wrestling acts of all-time, Eddie Gilbert and his group Hyatt & Hot Stuff International.  RIP.

Sorry to hear about the untimely passing of rapper/actor Heavy D, one of the most popular rappers of the late 80's/early 90's. I was a big fan of his work, especially songs like "We Got Our Own Thing", "Black Coffee", "Jam" with Michael Jackson and "Alright" with Janet Jackson. R.I.P.

Notes on Last Night's MTV Video Music Awards

A review of last night's MTV Video Music Awards:


- I heard the show was going to start with one of my favorites, Lady Gaga, so I was excited about that… until she actually hit the stage. She was dressed like a guy. She looked like the guy from Karate Kid. She give this speech where she went on and on and pretended to be Lady Gaga's boyfriend. This thing went on ten minutes too long-- and the segment was only five minutes. She then played “You and I”, which is just not the same without the boots and without her ass hanging out. She was joined by the guitarist from Queen. I’m sure he was sorry to be dragged into this mess. I hated this segment with a passion.

- And we’re off!

- There was no official host for the show, but comedian Kevin Hart introduced the show and did skits throughout. His monologue was hit and miss. He did a joke about the cast of Jersey Shore spreading STDs and they actually seemed happy about it. Maybe they didn’t understand. Earlier this week, I read that Pauly D of the Jersey Shore said he wouldn’t consider going on Dancing with the Stars until his career was on the decline. Um, holmes, that would be right about now.

- Nicki Minaj and Jonah Hill presented the first award of the night, Best Pop Song, which went to Britney Spears for her song that sounds like it should be in a Six Flags commercial promoting a new ride. BTW, Britney’s back to being hot. It was a slow road back. It’s almost like the head shaving days never happened.

- A big test for me was seeing if I could recognize the names of any of the nominees for Best New Artist. I got one out of five. I’m so old.

- Kanye West and Jay-Z hit the stage for a surprise performance of their song “Otis”. This was hip hop its finest. I should have stopped watching the show right here and ended on a happy note.

- Was this Kanye’s first award appearance since the Taylor Swift fiasco? You know the one thing that was lost in that whole debacle? He was absolutely right! I have never seen a Taylor Swift video (and with any luck, I never will) but there’s NO WAY it could have been better than Beyonce’s epic “Single Ladies” video. Ain’t no way! Sure, he shouldn’t have stormed the stage, but that’s a different story.

- Nicki Minaj won the Best Hip Hop Award (dear Lord) and declared that Lil Wayne was the best rapper alive. Poor delusional girl…

- Adele performed. I know she’s supposed to be the big thing, but I’m just not down. Maybe someday.

- Kim Kardashian and Her Ass co-presented the Best Male award to Justin Beiber. He looked goofy as ever and got all religious on us.

- Chris Brown performed. How is this happening? I’m astounded every time I see the guy back on stage. I would have bet money that his career was over after the Rihanna incident. His performance was good and he got a standing ovation-- except from Jay-Z, who sat and sipped from a cup as if nothing was going on. Phenomenal.

- Lady Gaga, still dressed as a man, came out to present the career achievement award to Britney. They teased what would have been a very awkward kiss and thankfully they didn’t go through with it. Britney’s voice was deep as hell. She sounded like she should be doing AM drive-time radio. And it was weird, because although she looked really nice, she looked like a linebacker when standing next to Gaga.

- Beyonce gave a nice little performance and showed off her baby bump at the end. Somebody commented on the Entertainment Weekly live chat that “Kelly Rowland will be the aunt that no one likes”.

- There were a bunch of presenters throughout the night that I didn’t recognize. I just figured they were all from Twilight or Glee.

- The girls from Jersey Shore came out to present with Cloris Leachman. The girls were all orange and not very attractive. Cloris was using their lingo and said she was DTF. The crowd went wild. Since I am no longer hip, I had to go look this up…

- Dear God…

- They gave an award to Gaga, still continuing this “I’m Lady Gaga’s boyfriend” character, which was beyond annoying by now.

- Russell Brand gave a longwinded intro to the Amy Winehouse tribute, which included words from Tony Bennett, footage from earlier this year of a recording session between Tony and Amy (she looked wonderful), and Bruno Mars singing “Valerie”.

- The little broad from Dawson’s Creek came out to present the Video of the Year award to Katy Perry. At this point, I didn’t even want to know why she had a big yellow box on the top of her head.

- Lil Wayne got the closing slot. Man was this terrible. I have to give the guy credit for being so obviously dreadful, but convincing the general public that he’s this terrific rapper. It’s fascinating. I was greatly hoping that he would pull his pants up, but it was to no avail. He did the worst lip synching this side of Milli Vanilli in 1990. He ended the performance by saying his new album went on sale at midnight. Yeah, I’ll get right on that. This was wretched.

As was most of the show. They need to bring back Chris Rock and Madonna in her wedding dress next year.

This is my new favorite song. There might be hope for rap music after all.

New Britney Video

Britney is back (and in fine form) with the third video from her her Femme Fatale album, "I Wanna Go". There are references to The Terminator, Thriller, Kill Bill and a marquee showing the sequel to her movie Crossroads. It's a fun little clip. Check it out here.

The New Jill Scott

Beyonce's New Single

Just when I thought Beyonce had derailed her career with "Run The World (Girls)" and "1+1", she came back strong with this new song, "Best Thing I Never Had", from her new album. Thank goodness Jay-Z doesn't have to carry this broad just yet.

Gaga Day

It was a big day for Little Monsters and big butt aficionados alike, as Lady Gaga's Born This Way CD was finally released today. It was available in two versions: the deluxe (above) and the standard, which features her head on a motorcycle; perhaps the most ill-advised album cover since Snoop Dogg's debut. The music is solid though so that's what counts. Happy Release Day!

The Grammys

Nothing else was on, so I decided to catch the 192nd annual Grammys show. It started off hot but lost steam somewhere in the last hour or so. These shows need to take a cue from the MTV Awards and trim them down to two hours. Anyway, the highlights:

- Loved the tribute to Aretha Franklin. Christina Aquilera redeemed herself from last week's overblown anthem fiasco (although she did fall towards the end), David Otunga's wife was excellent and Yolanda Adams topped them all. Fantastic start to the show.

- I could have really gone without seeing Ricky Martin in tight ass football pants.

- Lady Gaga. Where do we start? The pointy shoulders? Were those horns coming out of her head? I mean, damn, this broad came out of an egg! I exchanged texts with world-reknowned music critic Jeffrey Watkins throughout this. He called her Madonna 2011. I said within five years she will be speaking with an English accent. This was the first time I heard the new song and it was fun. It may grow on me more.

- Speaking of Gaga, I caught her segment on 60 Minutes just before the Grammys. Not many shocking revelations, although she did admit to smoking pot and drinking whiskey during the creative process. I guess that explains the "Telefone" video. I also liked when she showed up for the interview with her ass out. You never saw that back in the days when Mike Wallace would interview Gerald Ford. And for good reason. Still cracks me up that her real name is Stefani.

- Usher and his son Justin Beiber was fine for what it was. For some reason, I thought I would be more annoyed with Beiber than I am right now.

- Stefani won an award! I can't believe those clowns played the "wrap it up" music during Gaga's speech! Hell no! You save that for Muse or Sugarland.

- I still don't know why the Muppets were out there with Cee-Lo. I was uncomfortable with Gwyneth Paltrow saying "ass" in front of the Muppets.

- I liked the Rihanna/Eminem/Dr. Dre segment. It may have been my favorite of the night.

- Can someone explain how in the world Justin Beiber qualified for best new artist? I know he's been grating on my nerves for at least TWO years by now.

- More Rihanna, which is just fine by me.

- What was that segment with Jennifer Lopez and her man? He looked like, well, like someone who had to sit and listen to her drone on for five years. Can you even imagine the amount of pure bullshit this man has had to hear over the last few years? It's unfathomable.

- If they re-do Three's Company as a new TV show or movie, who else could they possibly get to play Mr. Furley than Mick Jagger? It's so perfect. As soon as they put that show on the air, he'll be on there collecting rent every week! Make this happen.

- Who in the hell is Arcade Fire? Should I know them? Maybe I should get out more.

Gaga Announcement

Happy 2011, everyone! Lady Gaga started the year by tweeting a picture of her ass and announcing that she will have a new album in May of this year. It's gonna be a good year. Speaking of music, a clip has leaked of Kim Kardashian's new song produced by the Dream. Um, yeah. She better stick to her day job: walking around with a big ass.

The Softest Tour Ever

New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys are going on tour together. In 2010. This tour is so soft that it should be sponsored by Charmin. Madonna won't come to my town but I KNOW this abomination will.

2010 MTV Video Music Awards

I thought the MTV VMA's were a decent show. Sure I missed about an hour of it, but what I saw was good. Chelsea Handler was hit and miss as host. I liked the skit at the start with all of the rappers and Lindsay Lohan (who looked respectable for once) slapping her on the behind. Gaga was the big winner of the night and I loved her big dresses where she had to be helped on the stage. Loved the Kanye West performance at the end, toasting the douchebags and the assholes. That's my new theme song. I'm glad they kept this thing to two hours. Other awards shows need to take heed.

Gaga and Beyonce Do It Again

Lady Gaga's newest video for "Telephone" (featuring Beyonce) just came out and it's fantastic. These two should be in every video together-- not just theirs, but I mean they should be in everyone's video:

The Grammys

It was music's biggest night and the superstars came out for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards. It was a good show for about two hours, then it started to drag. When are they going to take the cue from MTV and shorten this thing to two hours? Anyway, the show was highlighted by a great performance from Pink (above) who got into some contraption and spun around while suspended in the air. It was incredible. They should have ended the show after that. Really, who is gonna follow some broad in midair with her full ass hanging out above the stage? It's unheard of in these parts. She was brave to do it and and she pulled it off flawlessly. Other highlights included Lady Gaga's duet with Elton John (she later sported a huge, goofy hat that only she could pull off), Beyonce breaking out into some Alanis Morisette, Rihanna showing up (and winning an award), and the Black Eyes Peas. Beyonce won six awards and deserved them all, especially after that Taylor Swift debacle at the American Music Awards. Speaking of Swift, somehow she managed to win the big Album of the Year award. Gaga and Beyonce were robbed.
